QUESTIONS ABOUT BECOMING AN ARMY MP?

By Doctor

I’m an army reservist and former active duty soldier who’s thinking about going back active duty as an mp. I just have a few questions before I make a firm decision about that mos:

1. What cycles mp’s work under(like one month in garrison, 1 in the field, etc.)?

2. What knind of first aid training do they get? ( I hate IV’s and I stay away from combat lifesaver cla*ses lol)

3. What kind of impact does it have on married couples and kids?

4. What kind of duties can I branch out into while performing this mos?

Any info is appreciated. Thank you!

If you’re stateside forget about doing any law enforcement as those have gone to DOD police and contract security. Overseas you will pull L&O duty along with being in the field for many days doing the other four out of five combat support missions the MP’s do. Back in Garrison you will work L&O doing all types of shifts, days, swings, mids and then roll back out to the field. Once you roll back in from the field you clean up three thousand pounds of vehicles and crap in enough time to run back home and put on a nice uniform and boots and get down to the MP station to pull your eight or twelve hour shift. Forget about birthdays, anniverseries, Christmas/Hannukah, Thanksgiving day as they don’t exist at least with your family and your one day off is probably going to be a Tuesday. There are other branches such as MPI, K-9, Traffic, CID, Special Reaction Teams or SRT, but really as an MP you are going to be a glorified infantry person swinging from the turret of a HMMWV most of your enlistment either downrange, deployed or in the field. I used to walk around on foot patrol in Germany and Korea both and other soldiers, infantry, armor etc. I would stop and talk to would tell me “when I reenlist I am going to be an MP.” Then I would give them a casual walk though of my month and before I left they decided to stick with their own MOS. While they are on there four or five day recovery non chargeable leave you are working the road or headed back downrange. It is not about what people think and I would really encourage you to find out more before doing this. 21 Years and I can’t say I didn’t enjoy it for the most part but there were times.. well you just have to be there.
First Aid training is the same as any other soldier in the Army.
You can do CLS if you want to but you don’t have to.
I told you about the other things you can do but keep this in mind. Just because you have an ASI as MPI or K-9, SRT etc doesn’t mean you won’t be deployed with the rest of them Every job including CID goes downrange and gets deployed. No one is immune.
