Blood Glucose Levels…?

Posted by: Doctor | Comments (4)

I’ve recently bought a blood glucose electronic monitoring system. It’s the One Touch Ultra Smart. I heard I should invest in one of these and make sure my blood sugar is okay. I have never been actually diagnosed with being pre-diabetic, but I want to monitor it. I probably was pre-diabetic before I recently lost 80+ lbs. Things are much different now with my body, blood pressure, I’m a*suming blood glucose levels, etc.

Today I used it for the first time. I skipped breakfast (bad I know… busy morning). So I ate for the first time around noon, with a light lunch. Then I checked my blood at about 4:00 and I had a glucose reading of 84mg/dL.

I was getting quite hungry so I went and made dinner and decided I would come back to check it again, after eating. If it matters.. I had homemade chicken noodle soup. I made it with whole wheat egg noodles, low sodium broth, etc. The rest is just veggies and chicken. It’s pretty healthy. I also had a 1/2 sandwich with whole wheat bread and turkey.

Right after lunch (now at about 5:00) it was 120mg/dL.

I am just getting an idea about blood levels… but I guess why I am posting this is because I am not sure about that spike. It’s not too high, but why the spike so much?

I will be checking it again in the morning (fasting check). Also I will be doing random checks, and I’ll have to see how it goes.. but I would like to know what you all think of going from 84 to 120… is that normal?

Any insite would be much appreciated!

Just wondering because I was tested for another std (a blood test). Can a blood test still show abnoralties, say, if I had HIV, even if that wasn’t directly tested?

My girlfriend and I are about to become s*xually active. I asked her if she had been tested for HIV and whatnot, and she said no…but being that she has health issues, she has frequently been in for blood tests and whatnot and no one ever said anything about her having HIV.

Do you specifically have to look for HIV, or can it be discovered while conducting other tests on blood?

Like, if you don’t go in specifically for HIV blood samples, can they notice abnormalities such as low white blood cell count etc? I know nothing of HIV, but I’m just curious. If you go in for standard blood work to check for cholesterol, diabetes, diseases, etc, can they see if you have HIV or not? Or do you have to ask them to check for HIV specifically?

THANKS!
Sorry if the question was confusing!
