What kind of shampoo should I use to wash my dog?

By Doctor

Is there a special dog shampoo to use? Or can I use human shampoo?

He’s a ba*set hound if that makes a difference.

Use dog shampoo. If you have to use human shampoo, make sure to dilute it.

For a dog shampoo, get a gentle one with natural ingredients.

some people will say u have to use dog shampoo…but honestly i use regular human shampoo on my dog all the time…the best is johnsons and johnsons baby shampoo

NO human shampoo. it doesn’t provide what the dog’s skin needs, and will only dry it out or irritate it. ONLY dog shampoo.

but make sure the dog shampoo is aloe or oatmeal based…they don’t dry out the skin as much and most vets recommend this type of shampoo anyway.

dog shampoo you can get it from supermarkets, shops or pet shops

Some of the shampoos designed for human hair may irritate your dog’s skin because they can contain harsher detergents. So use shampoos labeled specifically for dogs, or a gentle human shampoo

* No more tears: Just as we have baby shampoos, there are very gentle puppy shampoos available.
* Brightening/whitening: These are made for dogs who are supposed to be sparkling white after a bath, as opposed to the beige mess they are beforehand.
* Waterless or rinse-free: Using a dry shampoo, or powder, will minimally clean up the dirt, but is intended only for quick fixes. Your dog won’t get really clean, and a few days later the coat can feel even dirtier or stickier than before you used it.
* Deodorizing: An excellent idea for a dog who has just rolled in a dead rodent or fresh poop, deodorizing shampoos may not always be powerful enough to alleviate “eau de skunk.”
* Stamping out skunk: Technically this isn’t shampoo, but it’s more effective than deodorizing shampoo or that useless tomato-based mixture. Mix 1 quart of 3 percent hydrogen peroxide, 1/4 cup of baking soda, and 1 teaspoon of liquid soap. Mix and apply immediately, then rinse thoroughly.

You can use human shampoo just be sure to rinse well. Dog shampoos have the same ingredients if you read the labels. I use a body wash for my dog if I am out of doggie shampoo. I also use a tiny bit of conditioner on her and rinse that out too. If your dog has dry or sensitive skin you can use Aveeno products or pet shampoo for the right skin condition. Lots of online stores have a good selection of sensitive skin shampoos for pets. Best of luck to you!

Never wash your dog with human shampoo. Use an oatmeal based dog shampoo and never shampoo your dog more than once a week unless absolutely necessary, as your dog will loose the natural oils in his fur!

i also have a ba*set hound they smell. what we use on sadie is baby shampoo then we use some odor be gone dog shampoo but we found that the odor be gone dog shampoo stuff doesnt clean too good by its self

For hounds I like “Fresh-n-Clean” by Lambert-Kay. Gets rid of the “hound dog odor”, and keeps it at ‘bay’ (pun intended) for awhile.

i have been told that you can use human shampoo but i think it would be better to get a sort of tea tree shampoo which keeps the fleas away you can get good shampoo from the vets. well it is your choice but the one i use is a tea tree shampoo, it keeps my dogs fur soft and keeps the fleas away
